Making it easier to keep up with the most important stories
Facebook has finally launched the redesigned homepage it has been testing for a while now and it comes with quite a few significant changes. Information overload is a recurring theme these days and for good reason. Getting information has never been easier, but the sheer volume makes it hard to discern the most important piece. Everybody is trying to tackle the problem and Facebook's answer is to change the default News Feed to surface the entries that may be of most use to the users making it easier to keep up.
“[T]oday we are beginning to roll out some changes to the home page that simplify your experience by offering two views of News Feed: a summary view of the most interesting activity that's happened in the last day and a real-time view that shows you what is happening right now,” Facebook's Raylene Yung wrote. “You will be able to catch up on what you may have missed while you were away from Facebook and then easily switch to the real-time stream when you want to see posts as soon as they're shared.”
The biggest change is that to the default view in the News Feed. Stories are no longer chronological, but are sorted by their relevance based on your previous behavior and on who posted them. The way Facebook determines which stories are the most important is similar to the method used for the ill-fated Highlights section in the right sidebar. In fact, the Highlights are now gone with the feature's functionality integrated in the main feed. But the new News Feed view is more than just a relocated Highlights section, it also includes status updates that it also ranks in terms of their importance to you.
The space occupied by the Highlights section is now filled with important event notifications like birthdays. The old chronological News Feed is available in the Live Feed section, but this has seen several changes to make it more real-time. Status updates and other notifications now get refreshed automatically and, once you switch to this view, it will remain the default one for the entire session. Both views now feature a small Publisher with just a text entry box. The changes should be rolled out to all users today.

Facebook Introduces Translation Tool for Other Sites
Facebook is one of the largest sites in the world at the moment but it's not satisfied with being just another site on the Internet, not even the biggest, it wants to be the Internet and its most powerful weapon so far has been Facebook Connect. The login standard has seen great adoption by websites big and small and the social network is now hoping to entice even more new users with an interesting feature, free translations for their websites.
“Translations for Facebook Connect is available as a free tool for developers worldwide to simplify the process of translating a website, IFrame or FBML-based application into any of the languages Facebook currently supports,” Facebook's Cat Lee wrote. “For example, with Translations for Facebook Connect, country tourist boards or travel sites that want to attract foreign visitors on holiday can use this framework to translate their sites and automatically present the content to users in their native language after they log in with Facebook Connect.”
The appeal is obvious, websites will be able to get localized versions with reasonable quality translations for free, something that could prove very useful for several types of websites. Translations can be very costly and smaller sites can't really afford to pay for professional ones so this new tool opens up a new set of options for many sites and with 15,000 websites using Facebook Connect already there are sure to be plenty of willing partners. But the new feature isn't limited to websites; Facebook apps and other social widgets can also benefit from the program and get a crowdsourced translation.
The feature is built on the same method Facebook used to localize its own site. As late as January 2008, the social network was still only available in English and, despite solid growth outside of the US, could really benefit from having translated versions. But with the costs of translating a site its size prohibitive, even for a company flushed with investor money, it had to turn to its greatest asset, its users, to get it done. Two weeks after it introduced the Translation app, the site had a French and a Spanish version and, since then, has expanded its support to 65 languages with even more in the works. With the new program Facebook hopes to replicate this success for other sites as well.

Facebook is huge, the biggest social network and one of the largest websites on the planet. It's also growing at a hefty pace with no slowdown in sight. It has 300 million users worldwide and is one of the top five sites in terms of traffic in many countries. Yet, despite all this, some stats still manage to surprise us, like the fact that Facebook is now getting one in every four pageviews in the US. That's right, a quarter of the webpages served in the US come from Facebook, quite a feat for a company that, a year ago, wasn't even a threat to the then-dominant social network, MySpace.
Looking at numbers from Compete, researcher Perry Drake found that Facebook had grown to be the biggest website in the US in terms of pageviews, trumping giants like Google. While Facebook manages to get 25 percent of the page views, Google only gets about eight percent of the total monthly pageviews in the US, or one in 12. The numbers, of course, may not be precisely accurate, but they do serve as a good guideline.
Only traffic to Google's homepage at google.com and related sub-sites is counted, leaving out some properties that are hosted under their own URL, but this is still an impressive feat for Facebook and probably a cause for worry for Google. Facebook's dominance doesn't translate into the number of total visits where Google still has the upper hand, but the social network is closing fast. The discrepancy between visits and pageviews is easy enough to explain, users tend to spend a lot more time at Facebook and to navigate through a lot more pages, whereas at Google users tend to stay in one place to get the job done.
But the biggest worry for Google may be in the number of unique visitors where Facebook is again catching up. The social network is over 90 million unique visitors in the US at the moment and the number is still rising. These stats may be a bit surprising at first, but only because Facebook has grown so fast in the past year, while Google has been dominating the landscape for several years now. Everyone is looking at the search-engine brawl or the battle between social networks, but there is just one real war on the horizon and it's going to be between Facebook and Google.

UK hospital staff suspended over Facebook 'lying down game' pictures
Seven accident and emergency staff have been suspended from the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, Wiltshire, after they allegedly played the 'lying down game' during a nightshift and posted photographs of the stunt on Facebook.
The doctors and nurses are said to have taken part in the internet craze by taking pictures of themselves lying on resuscitation trolleys, ward floors and a helipad.
Their bosses at the hospital's A&E and Acute Assessment Unit were tipped off about the prank and the medics have been suspended on full pay pending an investigation.
The lying down game involves being photographed lying face-down in unusual locations, with participants trying to outdo each other by finding the most original place to be pictured, such as in trees, on mountain tops or in the middle of a busy road.
The game has its own website and several pages on the social networking site Facebook dedicated to it.
A spokesman for GWH confirmed the staff suspensions, saying health and safety and infection control regulations had been broken, as well as the NHS and Trust code of conduct.
He refused to rule out the possibility that sackings could follow, and said: ''The disciplinary hearings are yet to take place and we cannot predict the outcome.''
The trouble began when a total of 18 staff allegedly took part in the prank during a night shift on August 14/15 this year.
After taking photographs of themselves, they posted the pictures on a Facebook page called The Secret Swindon Emergency Department Group, which has since been removed from the website.
A source at the hospital, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: ''It was just some nurses and doctors on nights having fun, but the photos got onto Facebook and the management found out when someone leaked the details of the group. No-one knows what the outcome will be."
Dr Alf Troughton, medical director for Great Western Hospital NHS Trust, confirmed the suspensions but denied that patient care was affected.
He said: ''A number of staff were suspended following allegations of unprofessional conduct while on night shift duty in the hospital during a weekend in August.
''This did not involve patients and we are satisfied that at no time was patient care compromised.
''The Great Western Hospital sets high standards for staff behaviour at all times and therefore takes any such breaches extremely seriously.
''It is important to reassure patients and our workforce that this was an isolated incident and staff cover was maintained at all times.
''The allegations have been thoroughly investigated and seven members of staff remain suspended pending formal disciplinary hearings.''

Auschwitz launches Facebook site
The Polish authorities in charge of Auschwitz have launched an official site for the former Nazi death camp on the social networking website Facebook.
A spokesman said the move was aimed at reaching the younger generation and educating them about the Holocaust.
It follows the launch by Auschwitz - now a state museum - of a YouTube channel earlier this year.
More than a million people - 90% of them Jews - were murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz during World War II.
"We're always trying for new ways of reaching people, and in today's world one of the most popular tools is the internet, and on the internet millions of people use Facebook," said Auschwitz Museum official Pawel Sawicki.

"The Facebook page will provide a place for discussion which is not available on the official website," said Mr Sawicki.
"We want it to be a place of discourse but of course we won't let anyone do anything that may abuse the memory of the victims and this place.
"So far, it's just an experiment. We'll see how people react," he said.
